Madame Mulan Revisited

Description

My entry for the Fan Art Improvement contest. I removed the black from the remake because it seemed to overwhelm the delicate lines and made it more like stained glass than gilt. The focus has to be the face and the clothing must blend into the background. This was a lot of doodling and playing with line weight.

This is a beautiful piece! Instantly recogniseable as Mulan even from the smallest thumb.

The theory behind it is great! I adore the wide range of patterns and the strong and consistent theme in colour. The random spots of blue and purple are a great touch as the complimentary colours really draw each other out.

However, the fact that there is soft shading on her face but hard shading everywhere else makes it look out of place and is a lack of consistency. She probably could do with some sharper shading just to help her look part of the picture a little more.

The main thing though, is she needs something to draw her body out of the BG. The dress blends in far too much which leaves her looking a little like a bloating head. Maybe something as simple as a blue outline or a blue tinted drop shadow just to define her and create a border or something.

But overall, this is a wonderful piece. I think that the technique is great and there's a hell of a lot of creativity in it. It's very original and stands out as a memorable Mulan fan art! I love it. Well done.
